Friday Night Relaxing

Here is how I spent my Friday evening, getting some hooking time in, relaxing after a very busy week at work, and slowly recuperating after the oral surgery the Friday before.  My jaw is still just a little sore, but healed for the most part.

Crochet is very relaxing to me, it is very therapeutic.  I love it.  If I am too tired to design jewelry, or fuse glass, I can still be creative and crochet.  I will not use power tools or light a torch when I am tired, as that is a recipe for disaster, so I can pick up a crochet hook and be creative and also relax at the same time.  The stress of a busy day, or week melts away.

This will be a gift for someone special, so I am not telling you any more about it for now.  You will see pics of it when it is finished.

New Art Studio Curtains

This was a very fun project.  I hand-painted new curtains for my New Art Studio.  I wanted something fun and artsy for the Art Studio, so I created them.

I started with some white sheeting fabric.

Then I dug out some textile paint I had from previous projects, and brushed on some hot pink.

I went to a smaller sized paint brush and brushed on some violet, used brush strokes and some spatters, and I am liking it so far.

Next I applied teal, and then threw on a splattering of gold.

Curtain #1 of 4 drying.

I repeated the process for curtain #2, sewed the rod pockets, the hems and mounted the curtain rod on the wall and tada!!!  One set of curtains done!!

Here is a close up of the painting.

I started curtain #3 for Window #2 and ran shy of paint.  After several days of looking and several trips to local art supply stores, I found more paint in Sarasota.  Yay!!!

Here are the completed set of curtains for Window #2, painted, rod pockets and hems sewn; and curtain rod mounted.

I am loving my new artsy curtains for my New Art Studio.  I did not like being out back after dark with no curtains.  It is also going to help keep it a little cooler in there for the summer too.

Loving my new studio, and loving my new artsy, hand-painted curtains.  Having fun being creative.

New Art Studio Deck

Here is the new my deck we built out back in front of my New Art Studio.  It has sure been nice having the new deck and the new stepping stone walkway.

With all the torrential rains and thunderstorms we have been having for weeks. I am so loving not having to walk through puddles and wet grass to get to my New Art Studio!!!

Living Room Drapes

I thought I would show everyone my Drapes I just finished sewing for my remodeled Living Room.  I had fun making them.  I set up my sewing machine, cutting board and ironing board out in the New Art Studio, as I don’t have the old art studio remodeled into my fiber arts room yet.  (That is another ongoing project).

Here is the fabric being cut into drapery panels.

Here is the old girl, she has been with me since 1978, my old faithful La Belle sewing machine.

Starting to sew the headers in place.

The rod pocket header tape being pined on for sewing.

Here is what the rod pocket tape looks like, just in case you have never see it before, it has little pockets for the curtain rod to pass through already made onto the tape.  Speeds up the process of making drapes nicely!

Here are the first three sets of drapes hung over the windows behind the couch in the bay on the east side of the living room finished and hanging.  Many thanks to my Hubby, Rick, for hanging the rods for me.

Here is what the finished headers of the drapes look like hung up on the rod.

Here is the drapes finished and hung on the window on the north side of the living room.  (sorry about the light glare on the right side of the pic from the door window.)

I had some left over fabric so decided to recover the old couch pillows I had kept from off of our old couch.  Rick was a bit skeptical, he wanted me to buy new pillows and just toss these, he could not envision them having new life and being upcycled.  I think mostly because he hated the old couch.  Lol.

Tada!!!  Upcycled couch pillows recovered to match drapes!  Needless to say, Hubby was very pleased with the finished pillows and the drapes.A fun project indeed.  I had just enough left over fabric for the three pillows.  Very pleased with my spruced up living room now, and Hubby is definitely a happy camper.

Fused Glass Kitchen Cabinet Door and Drawer Pulls

Finally finished all my Fused Glass kitchen cabinet Door and Drawer Pulls.

I started by out laying out and cutting my glass in 1 and 1/2 inch squares.  I actually started these quite some time back in the old art studio upstairs, and finished them in the new art studio.

I ground the edges so they were not sharp on my glass grinder.

Here is a group all cut and ready to start placing the diachroic pieces on top.

Then I started laying out the little dichroic pieces of glass and the stringers on top of the blue glass and securing them with a drop of clear craft glue, so they don’t move in the kiln as the glass begins to work when firing.

In the top section of the pic above you can see 6 already fused drawer and door pulls.

I fired a total of 47 door and draw pulls.  I needed 45 for my kitchen.  I wanted a couple of extras, just in case one breaks in the future.  Below, another group cleaned, laid out, glued and ready to fire in the kiln.

Below: In the kiln ready to fire.

The two pics below show some of the finished, fired pulls after they came out of the kiln.

Each draw and door pull is a one-of-a-kind original piece of art.

Below is a pic of the backing pieces I purchased especially for mounting on fused glass door and drawer pulls.

Backs epoxied on and ready to mount on the cabinets.

Mounting them on the kitchen cabinets

Here we have some of the hand built Hickory cabinets, built especially for my kitchen by a wonderful friend!!  I had to do his beautiful cabinets justice and make special door and drawer pulls for them.

Below: Close up of a couple of the upper cabinets with pulls mounted.

Below: Close up of under Island cabinets with pulls mounted.

I even added a pull to my microwave door.

Thanks for checking out my blog post.

First Class Taught in the New Art Studio

It is so nice to get back to teaching again, and to have the space to teach in.  Just loving the New Art Studio!!  Such a great creative energy in my new space!!  If you know me you know I love creating and I love teaching.
I am a little slow with this post, as you know life and work sometimes gets sometimes gets in the way.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of teaching a Precious Metal Clay (PMC) Class to a student named Pat.  Pat declined to be photographed, but I did take pics of the projects we worked on.  It was a fun class.

In this pic we are sculpting some of the PMC.

For those who don’t know anything about PMC, it is like modeling clay.  You have to keep it moist while you work with it.  You can roll it, press it, draw on it and/or carve designs in it, just like modeling clay or FIMO.

Here are some of Pat’s pieces she was creating in Class.

You can see some of the tools on the table, cookie cutters, textured sheets to press designs into the clay.  It is a lot of fun to work with.

After you are done sculpting and the clay has dried, you can clean up any rough edges on the pieces, and the put them in the kiln and fire them.  Two hours later, presto you have a metal pendant.  In this case we used Silver Clay and it comes out .999 Silver, better than Sterling Silver.

Below, Pat’s finished pieces.  Three after polishing, one before polishing up.

And my finished pieces.

I would love to teach a class for you, and love to share my knowledge with you.  Contact me to arrange your class.  Click here for more info on classes:  “Classes I Teach”

House Painting

This post is a deviation from my regular posts, it has a little to do with the new art studio.  I thought I would show you our fresh paint on our house, after we stuccoed it.
Here is a shot of the stucco going on, which gives you a before image.   It is an old house which was built in 1925, which has been the never-ending remodeling project for years now.   We painted it white with the teal trim 20 years ago.  It definitely needed a face lift.  My Hubby says we are going to restore it to the spender it never had.  LOL

Here is the front of the house now.  This is the north and west sides.  (Obviously we have some construction debris to clean up, but I just had to share pics.)

A bit closer pic of the front.  They still have some soffit work to finish up.

Close up of the west side.

Another view of the west side from the back yard.  This is the kitchen/dinning room side and our bedroom above it.

The back of the house, south side.

This it the living room door facing the north, with the river view.

The main door facing the north, which enters into the dining room/kitchen area.  Both doors enter from the front patio.

This is the east side, the living room, and above it on the north-east corner (the right side) is my old art studio which will be the new fiber art studio (sewing, yarn, spinning, all things fiber related) and on the upper south-east corner (the left side) is my office.  Here is a before pic of the stucco going on.  We also replaced 5 windows on the second story a few years ago as you can see.

And here is the east side now.

Another view of the east side, living room, fiber art studio and office.

We also had the painters paint the patio wall.  This is the view of the river from our living room and front patio. You can also see our deck in the right hand side of the pic among my hubby’s potted plants (Pineapples and hot peppers).

Out in the back yard on the south side of the house we have my new art studio, and…

Rick’s wood shop.

My, how some stucco and a fresh coat of paint can change a place!  Still a lot of construction clean up to do, but we are getting there!!  I love it.

Final Touches on the New Art Studio

Wrapping it up.  Not much more to finish the new art studio.  Got the last section of the floor on the south side painted.

Cleaning and prepping the last section of the floor on the north side for painting.

Putting the paint on one of the last sections of the floor on the north side.

My Hubby got the exterior motion detector light installed, so the last section of the wall inside has been closed up and caulked.  Ready for primer on the wood trim around the door, and for the final coat of paint.

The painter who was painting our house also painted the exterior walls of the new art studio for me, so I did not have to paint it myself.  Yay!! Here is the north side with the window and door.

Here is the south side with the big window.

Here is what both halves looks like from the outside.

Not much left to complete it, a little bit of paint on the inside corner by the front door, and one small section of the floor left to paint, a few touch up spots here and there, and it is done!!!

Finishing Up The New Art Studio

I am down to all the finishing touches on the new art studio.

Here you can see I finally got all my sheets of stained glass out of the house and back into the cabinet where they belong safe and sound!  Yay!!  Only chipped the corner of one piece.  I thought that was a pretty good accomplishment.  It took me months and months of carrying a few sheets out at a time every time I went out back.   As you can see I have a lot of beautiful stained glass to work with.  I have it all organized by brand and by fusible and non-fusible, and have one cubby for my glass rods for lampwork or flamework glass bead making.  This will make everything very easy to access when I want to create!!

I started grouting the tile on the new counter top, messy, but a necessity.  My wonderful Hubby, Rick, got the trim board mounted on the front of the counter top.

Finally all the grouting mess is done and the tile cleaned!!!  Yay!!!

My two 110 Kilns and my microwave are now reposing on the new counter top in their new home.

Now I am back to finishing the painting of the floor!  You can also see I put spray foam in the crack in the floor between the two units to seal it up.

Prepping the next section of the floor for paint, under the window on the South side.

In between waiting on paint, grout and caulk to dry, and while cleaning out the old art studio upstairs in the house, I found this old Dave’s Insanity hot sauce bottle rack.  I stuck it away some years ago on a shelf and forgot I had it, thinking I could use it for something.

I flipped it upside down, and got my wonderful Hubby to cut a dowel and drill holes in it for the dowel.

I put a couple of coats of some pretty blue paint on it and, presto change o, I now have a new “upcycled”/”recycled” rack for my spools of bead stringing wire and my small pliers, cutters and crimping tools!!!  I love my little rack!!

Things are progressing nicely!!

New Art Studio, Almost Done

Here is the latest update on the New Art Studio.  It is almost done.

I have been continuing to bring all my stained glass out of the house a few sheets at a time and putting them back in the cabinet.  I have been organizing it by brands of glass, and fusible and non-fusible glass.  I also had a cubby for my glass rods for lampwork bead making.  Everything will be real easy to access for ease of creating.

Just had to show you this pretty piece of my stained glass.  I have so many pieces of beautiful glass.  I was very fortunate to buy a lot of beautiful glass some years ago from a lady who was moving out of state for a very reasonable price.

We brought my stainless steel table out of storage with help of my grandson, Devin.  Forgot how heavy the thing was!!  It will be the prefect work surface for my torches for lampwork, also called flamework, bead making!  This is not it’s final resting place, but we got it into the studio.  I will move it after the rest of the floor is painted.

Final coat of paint on the last wall on the north side by the door, except for that upper corner and the door trim on the right hand side.  My Hubby, Rick, is installing a motion detector light on the outside of the building, and then that panel will be put up and painted, and the door trim painted.  It is dark at night walking in and out of the house into the back yard, so the light is much needed.

Hubby put the trim board on the front edge of the counter top and I started grouting the tile.

Removing the blue painter’s tape from around the window on the north side.

Next work to be done: finish grouting the tiles, finish painting the floors, also have some touch up spots of paint here and there, and paint the trim boards on both counter tops.  Almost done!!
